Courtyards are the most important feature of Cuban Architecture.
This is the first book that documents the secular presence, the compositional role, and the typological uniqueness of Cuban courtyards through a comprehensive narrative across centuries.
More than a historical study, Courtyards of Cuba is a beautifully designed coffee table book that combines an insightful narrative with a rich visual archive. Through stunning historical images, it captures the essence of these architectural elements, showcasing their evolution and enduring significance in Cuban culture.
It is an essential contribution to understanding the historical continuity of ancestral ideas and their timeless value across different cultures and living traditions.
Julio César Pérez-Hernández is a world-class expert in Cuban architecture and urbanism and the first and only Loeb Fellow at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in Cuba's history, where he became the 2012-2013 Wilbur Marvin Visiting Scholar. He is an educator, visionary, historian, and published author, as well as the Founding Principal and Creative Director of Caesar Studio | Architects & Planners, an international practice spanning architecture, urban planning, and urban design.
He drafted a Master Plan for the future of Havana and has designed and built projects in the United States, Cuba, Spain, and Panama—some of which have received prestigious awards. His academic and professional work has been featured in several international publications and exhibited in Cuba and the United States.
